The Rady Business School is excited to be partnering yet again with Sony Electronics for the 4th consecutive year of their annual case competition. The competition is a two day event hosted on site at Sony’s North American Headquarters in Rancho Bernardo where 40 top MBA students from around the country work on a real world business challenge. Grouped into mixed teams of four students from different programs, they have 24 hours to come up with a polished presentation that they then deliver to the judges comprised of senior leaders within Sony.
Although the competition is open for applicants from top MBA programs from across the country, UCSD Rady is the sole program that partners with Sony on the marketing, preparation, and running logistics of the event ever since the partnership began in 2010 and have become an indispensable team member to ensuring the competition endures. Members from Sony and Rady begin meeting in March to plan the November event, running the application process and the planning sessions all the way through the year. During the competition itself, Chris Kelly from Rady MBA Careers and Laurie Spears from Rady Career Development office, ensure that everything goes smoothly by being on site and making sure everything from the hotel shuttle to the event security goes to plan.
UCSD’s successful collaboration with Sony goes beyond just the planning and preparation, as it has directly impacted the students. Rady has had students selected each year the competition has been held despite receiving no preferential treatment from Sony’s resume review. Their success has shown up in the competition itself as the 1st place teams from the previous two competitions both featured UCSD students. These two winners, Frank Wang and Mike Bruner, both were subsequently selected for final interviews for Sony’s MBA rotation program where they continued their winning streak by receiving offers and have both begun working for Sony as of this July.
The 4th year of the competition will kick off on November 8th and we would like to wish the students selected from Rady, Peter Butler & Oluseyi Oshinowo, best of luck in continuing UCSD’s winning tradition!
