Overheard at Rady: 20 Student/Alumni Perspectives on their Rady School Experiences
On Entrepreneurship
“The Rady School’s StartR accelerator not only helped me refine my startup idea but the experience also provided me with vital industry connections in the beverage world. We are currently in the process of incorporation and are looking forward to launching our first sample product by end of our last quarter.” – Rajdeep Sidhu (Full-Time MBA ’15)
“The Lab to Market program was essential for Genrix and allowed us to graduate with a world class business plan, pitch, and gave us the skills we needed to start effectively showing Genrix to a wider audience. I see entrepreneurs making mistakes all the time that we learned not to do on day one of our Lab to Market class.” – Andrew LeBlanc (FlexEvening MBA ’15)
Patrick Walsh (FlexWeekend MBA ’15)
“I set the bar high by military standards, but I wanted to pursue a different standard – a challenging and respected standard. [When visiting the Rady School] I knew I found the place that would meaningfully challenge and inspire me. Entrepreneurship answered my internal questions. The Rady School genuinely recognized my service and leadership and offered me the opportunity to come onboard. I’m in my second year of the program, and it certainly has been challenging – and more importantly, inspiring. I am proud to be part of this institution – just as proud as serving in the Navy.” – Patrick Walsh (FlexWeekend MBA ’15)
On San Diego’s Innovation Economy
“With more than 400 biotechnology and life sciences organizations, San Diego offers a perfect setting for business-minded individuals to develop meaningful research into successful commercialized offerings.” – Christina Littler (Full-Time MBA ’15)
Second to the left: Eric Yang (Full-Time MBA ’15)
“Being in such a prime collaborative location provides Rady a huge pool of resources that grants it the ability to tap into the resources and minds of some of the best in countless industries.” – Eric Yang (Full-Time MBA ’15)
On Community
“Where else can you find world class faculties and not have to worry about going to class under sub-zero temperatures in the winter time? On a serious note, Rady MBAs are driven by a desire not just to excel in their careers but also to help others and have a positive impact. I chose Rady based on four things – best fit, ROI, diversity and the relaxed atmosphere.” – Aaron Chiu (Full-Time MBA, ’16)
“My classmates and my connections at Rady became the foundations for my success. If you’re seeking an innovative environment and individualized experience where you can create your own outcome and destiny, then Rady should be at the top of your list. The caliber of the students you’ll be sitting next to, as well as the instructors and professors who will be standing in front of you, are second to none.” – Ciara Kennedy, Ph.D. (MBA FlexWeekend ’06)
“Rady is all about the people. The staff, faculty, and students have made this an incredible journey thus far. I have been challenged and rewarded at every step. The learning is truly comprehensive, extending beyond the classroom with professional seminars, mentoring opportunities, networking events, independent projects, and more. I’m happy to be a part of this entrepreneurial family. Without a doubt, Rady was a good choice for my career transition.” – Vance Lopez (Full-Time MBA ’15)
Right: Julia Lee (Full-Time MBA ’15)
“One of the best things about being a second-year student was working as a teaching-assistant for first-year MBA classes. It was a chance to hone my own knowledge of marketing and help others better understand it too!” – Julia Lee (Full-Time MBA ’15)
Tracey Lyn Davis (FlexEvening MBA ’15)
“Rady has fostered new friendships, professional networks, and ultimately a special place where I truly feel like I evolved from an ambitious young adult into a working professional with a bright future. Leaving Rady is like moving away from home all over again to go to college. Something that must ultimately be done for my higher growth (as cliché as that is), but all the same a sad reality that something so great and comforting must come to an end so that I may embark on what lies ahead.” – Tracey Lyn Davis (FlexEvening MBA ’15)
On Career Development
“I pursued an MBA to supplement my career in science and technology. Rady created an environment that utilized my background as a backbone for my leadership development, and provided a network, where I could apply my new found acumen in the industry I desired.” – David Tamayo (Full-Time MBA ’14)
“My Rady MBA gave me the tools and experiences I needed to turn my passion for my product into the successful company that I have today. I was surrounded by like-minded and inspired people, and it was through Rady that I was able to pursue my dream and make my vision a reality.” – Eric Norman (Full-Time MBA ’12)
“Applying for the Rady MBA program was my catalyst to transition to a new career and a new chapter in my life” – Nicole Ventinilla (FlexEvening MBA ’16)
“Throughout the past two years, in addition to working hard at earning my MBA, I built a valuable network of professionals and mentors, and developed potential new business ideas that I will pursue after graduation. I am so glad that I made the right decision and am looking forward to being a proud UCSD Rady alumnus in the near future.” – Dina Shuqom (FlexEvening MBA ’16)
Middle: Michael Miklaski (FlexWeekend MBA ’15)
“Suffice it to say [going to Rady] was perhaps the best move I could have made. With the information I have learned to date I have been able to immediately apply to my current job and it is benefiting not only myself but my company and fellow coworkers as well.” – Michael Miklaski (FlexWeekend MBA ’15)
On Faculty
“The professors here really helped me figure out where I want to go and who I want to be. They encouraged me to apply for a PhD this year and supported me throughout the whole process. It was definitely one of the most life-changing experiences in my whole life.” – Oliver Binz (Master of Finance ’15)
On if They Hadn’t Gone to Rady
“I’d be afraid to start my own company.” – Matt Archer (FlexEvening MBA ’14)
“I’d be way more provincial in my thinking.” – David Cornell (FlexMBA ’08)
“I’d not become an entrepreneur.” – Silvia Mah (FlexWeekend ’10)
“I’d be less informed, less networked, less credible and less capable of adapting as required by business demand. Rady helped me grow.” – Ashley Gambhir (Flex ’09)

John’s Rady Experience
I decided to pursue an MBA at Rady because I wanted to get involved with biotech startups and make connections with people of similar interests in that community. My Rady MBA ended up not only connecting me to the San Diego biotech community but also an excellent mentor. These allowed me to gain opportunities that led me to China and consulting, and provided a mindset that helped me to excel. For example, Rady’s Lab to Market course series trained me to think holistically about starting a company and at a different level of perspectives.
Since graduating from Rady, I became a CFO of a Cancer diagnostics startup in San Diego while doing independent consulting. I left the US in 2011 to come to China and started my career in management consulting. I recently joined BCG as principal of the life sciences sector. In this role, I use the leadership training and broader set of communication skills I learned at Rady to sell projects to bring in revenue and manage project teams for delivery to add value to clients.
My advice for other Rady students is to step beyond the classroom, as I did, and get involved helping San Diego companies through independent studies to gain first hand experience and apply what you learn in the classroom.
