A spotlight on Rady’s MSBA capstone

In today’s business environment, being skilled in analytics is becoming more and more of an advantage across many industries and corporations. Playing it safe with a basic understanding of business practices might be satisfactory, but successful businesses use data analytics techniques and models to make better decisions and gain a competitive edge.

At Rady School of Management, we equip our students enrolled in the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program with the skills needed to thrive in these types of data-rich business environments.

Our MSBA program offers rigorous, hands-on training that prepares students how to identify business opportunities, generate business insights and create business solutions, all through data and analytics. It’s unique in the sense that it delivers a curriculum at the convergence of data science and business.

As Raymond Pettit, Executive Director of Rady’s MSBA program, notes, “Rady is one of the few business schools that has a strong and collaborative relationship with our data science colleagues on campus. Many other schools that offer MSBA degrees are often stand-alone, however Rady offers cross-discipline opportunities through our close relationship with the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute and the Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego and our world-class faculty in all these areas.”

As part of the MSBA curriculum, students must participate in a capstone project, which consists of solving a well-defined business problem for a real life company. Each student pursues this experience as part of a team and must complete both written and oral exams to pass the course, as well as a complete report for the sponsor company.

With more companies seeking skilled professionals who can work effectively in teams to answer key operational and strategic business questions using data and analytics, the capstone project is crucial to position students for future career success.

“The capstone project isn’t just mandatory for students, it’s beneficial for them because it gives students the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned throughout the course and apply it to a real-world setting with an industry leading company,” says Pettit.

Every year, the capstone stakeholders include Rady School industry partners and big name companies such as Petco, Hewlett Packard, Becton Dickinson, Cisco, DIRECTavenue, Mirum, and Mazda among many others. These companies present students with an opportunity to obtain real industry experience that aids them in their job search and beyond.

It’s also not just beneficial for students, but it’s also valuable for the participating companies. Pettit added, “Many companies that our students work with see the capstone as a way to create a talent pipeline, so they can keep these students on as interns or they can hire students for permanent jobs afterwards.”

Some participating companies have been involved with the MSBA capstone project for several years, meaning they can build off projects from the previous years. Not only that, but the capstone is growing tremendously with more than 25 companies submitting proposals to take part just this year alone.

For this academic year, Pettit and the rest of the MSBA faculty were overall very pleased with the capstone results noting that; “The quality of students emerged in the amazing work and reports the teams presented to the sponsoring firms. This group of students will be making sizable contributions as their careers continue to grow and evolve.”

It’s an exciting time to enroll in an MSBA program at Rady as there are many advancements on the horizon.

“We’re going to expand the program and we can envision this expansion benefitting a larger number of companies based on the success we’ve seen so far,” says Pettit. “There is scope for the current capstone to develop into a joint-capstone in partnership with other disciplines on campus including data science undergraduates and our Master of Professional Accountancy program. To do this on the business side and work together would be huge and a new type of collaboration that nobody else is doing.”

My Experience on the Bay Area Trek

Early this October, students received the much-awaited email containing the list of companies that we would be visiting throughout the upcoming Bay Area Trek. The Bay Area Trek is a two-day event organized by the Rady School of Management where students have the opportunity to visit companies located in the Bay Area. This time around, students could visit Kaiser Permanente, PwC, Charles Schwab, Black Rock, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flex and Electronic Arts, among others. As a computer science student and an enthusiastic user of social media, I opted to visit Facebook and LinkedIn. I was very excited to have the opportunity to visit companies that have redefined the way people maintain personal and professional relationships in the world today.

In the days leading up to the trip, I wanted to make sure I was fully prepared and ready to put my best foot forward. I spent some time reading up about Facebook and LinkedIn and how they became the organizations that they are today. Doing my research beforehand gave me a better idea about what I could expect, and made me feel more confident and helped me think of questions that I could ask when I met them in person.

The first company for the day was Facebook. On my way there, I was able to experience first-hand the rush-hour traffic that the Bay Area is famous for. I was amazed to see how much the Facebook campus resembled a mini-city. They had their own shuttles, cycles and cabs for traveling within the campus. After checking in and having some breakfast, we sat down to listen to the team. They spoke about what working for Facebook was like, what their favorite things about the company are and how it is different from working at other organizations. They stressed how important the ‘learning mindset’ is, and how the abundance of resources enable them to produce their best work. This was followed by a campus tour where we got to see all the restaurants, the arcade and the store.

After lunch, I walked down to the LinkedIn office where I met the rest of the group. First, we had a panel with prominent leaders for LinkedIn. They talked about what their roles in LinkedIn are, their career paths and the work that The Economic Graph was producing. This was followed by a Q&A session where they answered questions about career trajectories, work, how LinkedIn had changed since it was acquired by Microsoft and what the future meant for LinkedIn. This was followed by a campus tour where an employee talked about all the perks available to LinkedIn employees and how all employees were expected to spend a day each month investing in themselves and learning something new.

After the company visits, our group headed to the Rady Alumni Mixer at Porterhouse in San Mateo. It was amazing interacting with our peers and Rady alumni, and to see how their journey had been since they graduated from Rady.

In all, the Bay Area Trek was an amazing experience. It made me realize how much I missed traveling and meeting new people. It gave me a unique insight into what working at Facebook and LinkedIn was like, and what values drove the culture in these two organizations. It was also interesting to see their own products played such an integral role in forming relationships within the organization, and how it gave everybody a sense of belonging and community. In today’s climate, where there is harsh criticism about the role of social media in our lives, we often tend to forget why they were created in the first place – to help everybody feel a little less lonely.

The Benefits of Completing a Specialized Master’s Degree in San Diego

The MBA may be the most well-known choice for people looking to enhance their career prospects in business. However, it’s far from the only option. In fact, many students are choosing specialized master’s degrees over the traditional MBA path.

Here’s what you need to know about this increasingly popular option, along with one San Diego school helping students position themselves for career success with specialized master’s degrees.

More Expertise, Less Time

If you’re interested in gaining expertise in one particular aspect of business studies, a specialized master’s may be in your future. A recent US News & World Report article on the uptick in interest in specialized master’s degrees highlighted the allure of specialized master’s degrees for candidates who want to hone in on and deepen their knowledge of a specific subject.

Consider the case of Swagata Chakraborty, a recent graduate from the Master of Science in Business Analytics program of the Rady School of Management at the University of California San Diego. After working for two years on Citi’s Global Decision Management team in India, he’d reached an impasse.

“Towards the end of my tenure at Citi, I was trying to figure out whether I wanted to pursue an MBA or wanted to hold on to my engineering roots. On one hand, I loved working with datasets and writing codes to come up with analytical insights and on the other hand, gaining a formal degree to prepare for the business side of industrial problems seemed imperative to me,” says Chakraborty.

Enter the Business Analytics specialized master’s degree at the Rady School. “When I learned about the Business Analytics Program at the Rady School, I realized that this is exactly the specialization I was looking for,” continues Chakraborty.

Not only do specialized master’s degree programs support the acquisition of advanced knowledge, but they often do so in less time and for less money — without the extensive work prerequisite.

Another appeal of specialized master’s degree programs? They can be tailored to respond to financial, environmental and other global disruptions,” according to The Globe and Mail. In other words, if you want a degree that will enable you to hit the ground running as an authority in an emerging area, specialized master’s degrees provide exactly that.

Introducing Specialized Master’s Degrees at the Rady School

One school with uniquely compelling specialized master’s degree programs is UC San Diego’s Rady. Specifically, its Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAc), STEM-designated Master of Finance (MFin), and Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) programs offer invaluable skills for students aiming for the inside edge.

MFin program executive director and instructor Michael Melvin says, “The MFin program is a one-year quantitative program aimed at giving the students the skills required to be competitive in today’s financial industry. It is more technical than an MBA program and specializes in finance with an emphasis on data analysis.”

Meanwhile, MSBA executive director Raymond Pettit insists, “Our graduates learn not just how to code, for example, but also how to take results and relate them to business objectives. In addition, the program exposes the students to all the major areas of business where analytics play a key role. This cross-fertilization of learning and techniques across multiple business dimensions actually strengthens the insights and methods that our students can bring to the table when they do arrive on the scene of their respective jobs.”

This mindset of customizable curriculum and hands-on industry experience is also being rolled into the Rady School’s most recent specialized program, the Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAc), which is currently enrolling its first cohort. In addition to preparing students for the CPA exam, networking and career services are a key component to helping MPAc grads get a jump on their careers.

No mention of Rady is complete without mention of its extraordinary location. Chakraborty says, “The location and the culture of California serve as an advantage. And while these programs may be shorter than their MBA alternatives, the intensive curricula are designed to pack in a lot, including sought-after practical experience.

“Every student gets a chance to work with a company to implement a real project. We get to interact with companies and solve real-world problems. This provides students with the experience and confidence required to navigate through the new field of analytics,” enthuses MSBA alumnus Snehanshu Tiwari.

Tiwari is also quick to point out Rady’s extraordinary faculty. “Each and every professor has a very strong research background. Profs [professors] go out of their way to help the student succeed in the program. They are always open to discussions and open to feedback. In fact, “Every staff member in the school wants us to succeed and do well,” Tiwari says.

The takeaway for everyone from recent grads to mid-career employees hoping to level-up? A specialized master’s degree may make sense from an advancement perspective.

But it is also important to note that all specialized master’s degree programs aren’t created equal. According to Forbes, education consulting firm Eduvantis founder Tim Westerbeck recently cautioned that “among the many useful programs are a few that were ill-conceived, and are less likely to give graduates the outcomes they want.” Because of this, choosing to pursue a specialized master’s degree is only part of the equation.

Finding the Right Focus: Rady Graduate Career Connections and Business Analytics Careers

It’s been five years already since the Harvard Business Review declared business analytics the “sexiest job of the 21st century,” and students who are graduating with a business analytics degree today are finding the market thriving for their skillset. Analytics continues to become increasingly valuable, as technology is facilitating the storing and processing of more data.

The Career Connections Team at Rady guides the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) students to best communicate the value of their degree to the employer. While “Analytics” may be a specific department, the focus is really that of an informed approach to decision-making. Generally, analytics positions are not housed within an analytics department but have various internal clients – either a business or a product owner for a specific segment of the company.

All successful businesses rely on data and models to make decisions, optimize budgets, manage inventory and gain competitive advantage. Data is used to monitor and track a number of insights, including customer behavior, supplies, operations and financial transactions. Having an employee who is capable of identifying trends, organizing large data sets and transforming data into insights is invaluable to the success of a company.

According to Top Universities, career opportunities are being found in areas such as market research, supply chain management, project management, talent analytics or consultancy. The Career Connections team sees these same trends with our Master of Business Analytics students landing in analyst roles across various departments.

Ultimately, students are graduating with the ability to assist business leaders in business modeling and decision-making with the use of quantitative methods and evidence-based data.

The career path also requires more than analytical skills, as there can be a lot of subjectivity and/or assumptions to analytics – different people in the organization may have different agendas. The Rady MSBA program provides students with the business acumen needed to help them be creative problem solvers and navigate all of these challenges. MSBA students receive career support from Career Connections through personal coaching, an array of programs and resources and a commitment to creating access to opportunities. Meet MSBA Student John Yamauchi

1) Why did you choose to pursue a Master of Science in Business Analytics?

I chose to pursue a MS in Business Analytics degree because I wanted to incorporate analytic techniques into making business decisions. Having skills in analytics is becoming more and more of an advantage across many industries and I wanted to get an edge by adding these skills to my resume.

2) Why did you choose the Rady School?

I chose the Rady School because of its deep integration with both the scientific and industrial community surrounding the San Diego region. I also am very impressed with the Rady faculty and look forward to learning more about how to improve business processes from the curriculum.

3) What do you feel makes Rady unique? How do you benefit from these aspects?

As an Alum of UC San Diego and an entrepreneur, I am very committed to working toward San Diego’s technological and entrepreneurial environment. Rady is unique because of its consistent focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. With so many great entrepreneurial faculty and students on campus, Rady provides a great environment for anyone with an idea to successfully grow it into a viable venture.

4) What classes are you looking forward to taking this year?

I look forward to taking Customer Analytics (MGTA 455), Collecting and Analyzing Large Data (MGTA 452), and Business Forecasting (MGTF 405). Each of these courses will provide great hands on experience to acquire, clean, and visualize relevant datasets. I’m also very eager to start the Business Analytics Capstone project, which will allow me to test out the new skills and put them to work in a real world environment.

5) How has your perspective on your career or your life changed since you came to Rady?

My perspective on my career has not shifted as I still am very entrepreneurial and project-based. However, my vision has been enhanced by allowing me to see the multitude of situations in which to apply analytics in making better decisions.

6) What are your goals after graduation?

After graduation, I would like to work on multiple projects in which I can provide consultation for companies and organizations. I especially would like to help startups receive revenue as soon as possible so that they can be more independent and sustain themselves going forward.

7) What advice do you have for prospective students?

I advise prospective students to make the best of their time at Rady and get a head start on all of the resources at UC San Diego. It is never too early to start networking with the faculty, administrators and current students. My decision was highly influenced by my communications with all of these individuals and I am very pleased with my decision.

8) Anything else you would like to share?

It has been a great experience thus far. Rady and UC San Diego are great places to be for entrepreneurs, scientists and those that want to change the future.

Why Study Business Analytics

Data matters. “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted,” attributed to Albert Einstein, explains the purpose of business analytics perfectly. We live in an age of bigger and bigger data—and businesses need ways to sift through it all, to figure out which combinations of data count—and which ones don’t. The success of business in today’s global economy depends on it. The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego offers a forward-thinking Master of Science in Business Analytics that teaches its students how to grapple with the reality of big data using business analytics.

What is Business Analytics?

Professor Vincent Nijs, co-director with Professor Terrence August of the Master of Science in Business Analytics program at the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, describes the field this way, “I think of business analytics as the field focused on how to use data and models to make better business decisions. Data Science uses many similar tools (e.g. machine learning) but the set of questions they seek to answer are often different. You can think of business analytics as ‘data science for business.’”

The Amount of Data That Companies Collect Gets Bigger and Bigger…

Just how big is big data? Really big, and getting bigger all the time. The EMC Digital Universe Study predicts that by the year 2020, 1.7 megabytes of new data will be created every second for every human on the planet. What does that mean? There will be 44 trillion gigabytes (44 zettabytes) of data in the digital universe. Where does the data come from? Just about everywhere—1.2 trillion searches per year on Google alone, over 1 billion people using Facebook every day, trillions of photos taken, and billions shared. By 2020, there will be over 6.1 billion smartphone users, and at least 1/3 of all data will be transmitted through the cloud. We haven’t even talked about online banking, business, movies, television, music, and games.

…But Businesses Don’t Always Know How to Use the Data

The Rady School‘s Professor Nijs states, “Companies are collecting more and more data but often lack the people to use it effectively.” He referenced a quote from a well-known report by the McKinsey Global Institute (2013): “Big data promises big things—but only if organizations have the right people in place who know what to do with it. A recurring theme among senior leadership across all sectors is a shortage of professionals trained and experienced at the intersection of disciplines necessary to capture, analyze, and generate meaningful business insights from big data. In addition to deep analytics talent, organizations need management with the right balance of business judgment and statistical skills to translate analysis into action.”

A Company’s Future Relies on Its Business Analytics

The need for effective, efficient business analytics is stronger than ever. Businesses need to know what they want to learn from business analytics—and then how they’re going to use that data to inform their decisions across the board.

Businesses need to be able to determine what data they need and then identify the data sources for gleaning that information. The final piece? Distilling that information into actionable insights using the tools of business analytics. Once businesses have a plan for capturing the desired data, organizing it, and analyzing it, they are in a position to develop plans to stay competitive.

Business Analytics Has Excellent Job Prospects…

According to a McKinsey Global Report, the US alone has a shortage of about 190,000 data scientists and 1.5 million business analysts. Globally and in the US, companies need experts in business analytics. High demand means higher salaries, and a variety of options. Graduates in Business Analytics work at large companies, start their own businesses, work in banks or FinTech, web-based businesses, retail and food companies, media companies, and marketing companies.

…Especially When You Study at a Forward-Thinking School Like Rady

The Rady School’s new Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) puts students at the forefront of the field. The program focuses on the problems big data poses to businesses—and how to solve them using models, statistics, and machine learning – in classes such as customer analytics, business intelligence, and supply chain analytics. The school’s bottom line? To graduate students who know how to use analytics to make a positive impact on business performance—and sustain it.

Professor Nijs says that “After graduation, our students should expect to work extensively with data, use statistics and machine learning, write code, and develop tools to enhance business decision-making. After gaining some experience, we expect them to be well-suited to lead an analytics team.”

First steps for prospective students? Those interested in studying in this program should have an undergraduate degree in a “quantitative discipline,” says Nijs, like “mathematics, statistics, economics, or physics.” They should also have some programming experience.

Rady School Center for Executive Development Offers New Business Analytics Course

The Center for Executive Development (CED) at UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management recently launched a new executive education course to introduce managers to business analytics. The aim of the two-day course is to provide an overview of how business analytics can be used to make enhanced data-driven decisions. Rady School faculty Karsten Hansen, Professor of Marketing and Vincent Nijs, Associate Professor of Marketing teach the course, which balances hands-on learning with leading case studies. Exclusive to the course is a user-interface developed and used at the Rady School that allows course participants to quickly and easily utilize open-source tools for data science.

“Although ‘big data’ is often discussed, very few people know what it means or what the implications are,” said Clark Jordan, Rady School assistant dean. “Our CED course, Business Analytics: Data Driven Decision-Making, will help individuals get a better handle on the power and utilization of business data analytics. From this course, they will get a conceptual framework and application tools.”

The new CED business analytics course is designed to meet the rapidly expanding need for employees who have experience in data science. In addition to the CED business analytics course, the Rady School launched the Center for Business Analytics and a Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) in 2015.

The CED business analytics course will be offered again after January 2016.

Rady School Launches Master of Science in Business Analytics

The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego has launched a Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) degree program. This intensive new program will offer hands-on training to prepare students to use data and analytics to identify business opportunities, generate business insights and create business solutions.

The MSBA program is the first in the University of California system and one of the very few in California. The program is designed to meet the rapidly growing need for skilled professionals who can frame key operational and strategic business questions and leverage data, analytics and information technology to discover new insights and to address these questions.

“Companies are increasingly data driven and there is a vast need for professionals who are able to analyze that data and translate it into meaningful business outcomes,” said Rady School Dean Robert S. Sullivan. “The Rady School’s Master of Science in Business Analytics provides students with the unique skillset needed to quickly make a significant impact at companies that rely on data for business solutions.”

MSBA students will gain both the quantitative skills to make better decisions and the ability to manage teams and communicate effectively with stakeholders throughout each phase of an analytics project. Graduates will be prepared to create immediate value in organizations by improving marketing, financial, management and operational decisions through the use of data and quantitative analysis.

Rady School Professors Terrence August and Vincent Nijs, who will co-direct the program, explained the program’s aim and design.

“Although the program has a strong technical bent, classes and discussions will address business problems,” said Nijs. “For example, we do not have any traditional classes on statistics. Rather, classes will focus on an array of topics such as customer analytics, business intelligence, supply chain analytics and will prepare students to apply methods like experimentation, statistics and machine learning to help formulate and answer business questions. The program we developed will be challenging and intense for students, but also hands-on and practical.”

“Vast amounts of data on customers, suppliers, operations and financial transactions are collected from a variety of sources, often managed in diverse systems, by multiple stakeholders,” said August. “Transforming this data into insights that can enhance decision-making is a key strategic challenge for businesses of every size, across all industries. We’ve thought a lot about how to design a program that helps to produce business analytics professionals who understand the full life-cycle of analytics projects. Our students will graduate knowing how to positively impact a businesses’ bottom line and sustain it.”

The Master of Science in Business Analytics is open to recent graduates as well as experienced professionals and is currently accepting applications for fall 2016. The 50-unit degree program can be completed in 12 months. For more information, go to: http://rady.ucsd.edu/msba.
