‘The best offense is a good defense,’ as the age-old adage says. When applied to the current health care landscape, preventive medicine is more important than ever.
The Rady School of Management will bring one of the leaders of this field to campus to speak on human longevity and preventive medicine as part of the annual Michael Kriegler Lecture Series event.
J. Craig Venter is the co-founder and executive chairman of Human Longevity Inc. (HLI) is a San Diego-based genomics-based, technology-driven company creating the world’s largest and most comprehensive database of whole genome, phenotype and clinical data.
The lecture will be moderated by Rady School alumna Ashley Van Zeeland (MBA ’10), Chief Technology Officer for HLI.
The focus of the lecture centers on how human longevity can be improved through preventive medicine, and what steps HLI is taking to improve on the subject.
All-star speakers
Venter is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his numerous invaluable contributions to genomic research.
In 2013, he co-founded Human Longevity, Inc. (HLI) to develop and apply large-scale computing and machine learning to make novel discoveries to revolutionize the practice of medicine.
Venter is also founder, chairman and CEO of the J. Craig Venter Institute, a not-for-profit, genomics-focused research organization, and is co-founder, chairman and co-chief scientist of Synthetic Genomics Inc., a privately held company dedicated to commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global needs such as new sources of energy, new food and nutritional products and next generation vaccines.
Van Zeeland joined HLI as part of the acquisition of Cypher Genomics, a leading genome interpretation company, where she was co-founder and CEO. Prior to founding Cypher Genomics, she served as director, strategic partnerships at the Scripps Translational Science Institute where she focused on novel public-private partnerships to accelerate translational research.
She has significant experience leading innovative scientific programs, including groundbreaking work in the genetics of autism, neurodevelopmental disorders and other rare genetic pediatric diseases. She received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles and her MBA from the Rady School of Management.

About the series
The Michael Kriegler Memorial Lecture Series was created to perpetuate Dr. Michael Kriegler’s spirit and enthusiasm for science by establishing programs that educate and motivate students and scientists — just as Dr. Kriegler did throughout this life. To accomplish this, his wife, Jan Tuttleman, established this lecture series to bring together the San Diego biotech community with the university, the faculty and students to build relationships and to share ideas.
Tuttleman graduated from the Rady School’s inaugural 2006 MBA class. She was a scientist, investor, philanthropist and entrepreneur. More impressively, as loving mother and wife, as social activist and human rights champion, her life continues to inspire the Rady School community, as well as the much broader community.
